Evolving Communication

By Brian Culp

Communication is key in any organization. This statement is particularly true when your organization is one like the Greater Mooresville Chamber of Commerce.

We are an organization made up of businesses and nonprofits that don’t always have contact on a regular basis except during monthly meetings. There are businesses with owners and employees who are very involved and use the chamber resources to their utmost.

However, a large percentage of our membership only sees what we are doing if they show up to the monthly meetings, Coffee Connections or Let’s Lunch.

We have a newsletter, but the metrics we get back are that it is not as well read as we would like.

Since January, I have been working as the head of our public relations committee, attempting to find more and better avenues to communicate with our members. Our goal is to find ways to engage our members and also drive business to them.

One way this has been done is by filling in the information on each member in Chamber Master on our website. This will allow people who come to our website to find our businesses more easily through the search tool.

We are also revamping the way we disseminate news and coming events. As always, if you have an event or news you would like to share, you should send it to Mindy Taylor, executive director, by email atmindy@mooresvillechamber.com.

Instead of simply putting it in the newsletter, as was done in the past, though, Mindy will now take that information and send it on. She will send it to Tom Greer of TRG Web Designs. Greer built the current site and is helping us maintain the site. He will post it on our website. Mike Washington of MWP Images will then take links from those posts and build a newsletter that is easier to read. The newsletter will contain links to take readers back to our website. Our hope is that this will make the newsletter more engaging and also drive more traffic to our website.

We welcome input about how the chamber communicates with members and potential members. Anyone who would like to help us in these efforts is welcome to join us on the fourth Thursday of the month at Bran N Shorts, directly following the Coffee Connections.
