Illuminate Walk & Family Event
On Saturday, September 30, 2023, the 3rd Annual Illuminate Walk & Family Event will be held at The Links at Heartland Crossing in Camby. Raising nearly $40,000 since its inception in 2021, the goal of Illuminate is to eliminate the stigma associated with mental health issues and addiction by increasing awareness and promoting communication in an effort to prevent suicides in our communities. In 2022, more than 500 people walked through the candlelit paths of The Links at Heartland Crossing Golf course to kick off the start of the event. In addition, there are food trucks, games and a raffle/auction. The band, Six Figures will be performing throughout the evening. All net funds raised will be donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to assist with community outreach and advocacy, education, research and family support.
Morgan County and the surrounding areas have been impacted by increased suicide rates over the past several years. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) works locally to provide prevention strategies and to create greater awareness. When someone dies by suicide, family and friends are left with so many unanswered questions. AFSP provides family support and resources to those who may need a local certified suicide grief bereavement counselor. They also provide connection to others who have struggled with a loss due to suicide. AFSP has established multiple training programs that have been provided free of charge to local workplaces, schools, organizations and neighborhoods. These programs provide information on prevention and awareness, as well as resources available in our community and throughout the state. Finally, their advocacy and outreach efforts helped to create the 988 Lifeline, which provides immediate crisis interventions by connecting citizens to a certified professional in their area via phone call or text.
